Trish,

Thank you for all your efforts.......very much appreciated.

It seems that there is a continuity profile from the 1841 Census, showing Mary LINGARD to the 1851 version with Mary LINGERT.......seems she liked children out of wedlock.....and then 1861 at Westmorland and so on.   His lifelong connection with boots (a trade he probably learned during his 4 years in Parkhurst Prison) and his "Native Place" consistently Preston, Lancashire, is a good example of the "balance of probability" approach!!

Of course I could be entirely wrong ::) :o

I went of in a tangent, ignore those birth reg with no Mothers mn at this stage.

Humphrey GREGORY married Margaret TOWERS 26 April 1818, St John, Deansgate, Lancashire
Occp Cooper
Margaret a Spinster*
Image on Familysearch.Org

So fits with what Marg posted.
So likely Mary was the illeg Daug of Margaret so born Towers
Married Robert Lingart 1836

What happened to him I dont know and you would have to research all those children again in case I mucked up and the birth regs may have Mothers mn Towers.

But everything else seems to work out.

Its late here and thats my excuse ;D

If your George is the boot man, he is not the son of Mary.
George, the son of Mary Towers is a Weaver in 1861 with his extended family, the Gregorys.

George Lingard, Boot Fitter is living with his aunt and uncle James and Betty Hardman in Kendal in 1861.

When I posted earlier, I thought your interest was in George, Mary's son, who presumably was the young offender. He seems to be the one who goes missing after 1861.
Or have I misunderstood.

To Everyone who posted,

I think George LINGARD's beginning, middle and end have been resolved.

He appears to have been the son of Robert LINGART and Mary TOWERS, who married in 1836 (courtesy of "marj" and "trish1120").   Robert died in 1844.   Mary was identified as a Widow in the 1851 Census.   From that point onwards the Census charted his life.........only his death details now remain outstanding.

Thank you for your individual help.   I am extremely grateful.

I am sorry to keep on about this but as I said, I am now not sure which George you want.

However, if I can just explain the other George - not Mary Towers son.

Robert Lingard married Margaret Robinson.
They had a son George b 1844 Preston.

He is with mum Margaret, as you point out in 1851. She is born in Catterall.

1861 George Lingard, boot fastener, is with uncle and aunt in Westmorland. James and Betty Hardman were both born Catterall.

James Hardman married Elizabeth Robinson in 1844, Garstang.

George then continues his career related to boots in various parts of Lancashire and Leicestershire.

You must have George in 1901 in Leicester. There is a relevant death in 1902, Leicester as George Lingart.

Heywood,

There is no need to apologise.......I have to ensure that his details are correct.

His convict records state that his mother was Mary LINGARD and when that detail was completed by the prison service it was probably 1857 and at that time she was living in Queens Street, Preston, and his "last place of abode" according to those records was Salter Street, Preston.    Those are the facts and would therefore place doubt on Westmorland.  I had delayed investigating the Leicester angle.

For now,
