Help with service number please
« on: Thursday 24 August 17 23:45 BST (UK) »
Hi there, I am urgently trying to trace my grandads RAF service number. His name was Stanley White. DOB 12-08-1912. Squadron 77. We have a photo from 1938 at RAF Driffield with him on.

Thanks in advance for any help. This is a request for my terminally ill uncle as we would like to urgently obtain his service record but do not have his service number.

Thanks again, Sarah

I think the best way is to go directly to MOD as per the attached.

You don't need his service number in order to obtain his service records ;D
It helps if you have it, but it's not mandatory!

But you will need his death certificate and pay the £30.

Hi.
I'm going down the same path of trying to find an individual's RAF service record.
On the 'SEARCH DOCUMENT Application part 2 - RAF Specific' Official Service number and National Insurance Number are requested and I have neither. DOB is requested but not as part of an either or.
Can anyone confirm that RAF records can be obtained without a service number?

Yes.

Fill in the downloaded form with whatever information you have and send it with the required  cheque  to the address stated on form.
Service number  makes search easier but name, dob, and rank on discharge  all help.

Thanks so much. However I just checked the birth certificate of one of his children an.....it has his rank and service number on it!
It pays to check every little thing.

Thanks all
