Great find, Rosie, thank you. So Helen Bowman isn't the daughter of William Wyllie. It's always good to eliminate things and narrow down the possibilities.

The annoying thing is that I am having trouble finding them in the SP 1851 census index, apart from the one who married George Smith.

FreeCEN has one of them, aged 24, born Lochlee, a dairy maid at Fasque, Fettercairn. If her age is accurate she will be the one who had Helen McLee and died in 1895 .... Aha! She is indexed as James on SP.

So I am still looking for the other two, and of course the illegitimate child.

So who is Betty Wyllie aged 8 in the household of George Smith & Spouse Jean Smith in 1851?

Step-daughter born Lochlee  :-\

She looks to be a likely candidate?

"Daughter of David Christison and Dianna Stewart, baptised 2 June 1816. She married George Smith on 4 July 1846 and died in Brechin on 12 October 1890."

1851 - George & Jean Smith have children James, Catherine & David & with them is Betsy the step-dau.

I don't know who the parents of George were but were they James & Catherine?

I do wonder who was the mother of William Wyllie, was she Elizabeth/Betsy?

Trying to piece together a naming pattern which may provide a clue being as this child is not named Dianna  ???

Betsy aged 8 in 1851 is proving difficult to find in 1861 but she could have married/died pre census?

It's also possible she has taken on her step-fathers' surname of Smith  :-\
