Court Documents
« on: Saturday 26 August 17 00:31 BST (UK) »
Hi all

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge of how to go about obtaining historic court documents? Or if it is even possible?

I have an ancestor who appeared in court on bigamy charges and was sentenced to 4 months in jail!

Thanks

I obtained court records of a nineteenth century Lanarkshire bigamy from the National Archives of Scotland, Edinburgh. The chap in question was sent to Perth Prison.

If you go to the on-line catalogue of the National Records of Scotland, go to "search" and enter the name and year, you will get details of the court papers.

It is also worth looking for the newspaper report of the case.

Are they accessible online, or do you have to go in person? I have two newspaper articles relating to this.

My ancestor was John Dominick Bonnon (Bonino). He appears in the Glasgow Evening Post on 21/05/1888 and the Glasgow Evening Citizen on 10/05/1888.

He married Elizabeth McCracken on 17th November 1887, whenever he was already married to Elizabeth O’Neill. I have that marriage record too

I am just trying to find out more information about the crime, and his prison record. I already got information on his past, but he doesn’t reappear until 1903 when he signs his fathers death certificate.
