Chester Trade directories
« on: Saturday 26 August 17 02:03 BST (UK) »
In 1901, my GF, Thomas Challlinor, was a coffee house keeper near the Chester Railway Station. The 1901 Census shows him as a self-employed coffee house keeper. His wife, Sarah, later became a confectioner in the Chester region, probably in Griffiths Street, Hoole. Are there trade directories that are likely to show them, and if so, under which categories? I've looked in a couple under coffee house keepers and confectioners, but these categories don't exist. So two questions:
1. Directories
2. Categories
Thank you.

The University of Leicester in it's Special Collections online has many, many Trade Directories.

The list for Cheshire is here:
http://specialcollections.le.ac.uk/cdm/search/collection/p16445coll4/searchterm/Cheshire/field/place/mode/exact/conn/and/order/nosort

I would search on his name?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Stan, you are such a winner!!! Thanks. I did find a later entry for 1934. By then Thomas had scarpered to NZ and poor wife Sarah was left running the caff. But now you've actually found me Thomas doing it. Brilliant!
