What is his name, and if a common one, who is he living with etc?

If you are unsure if locations on the census it is worth looking at the neighbours and trying to get a picture of the area. If you write down the neighbouring streets you can often narrow down the location where your ancestors lived. Go to page one, where you will see a description of the enumerator's walk, which can also be helpful.

(The thread goes a little off topic, but there is another link nearthe beginning of the thread worth clicking on)

Yes, it seems to have been a lodging house and the "half" means it was on an upper floor.

Keith.

It wasn't the workhouse ;D
Birmingham Workhouse was situated at Western Road, Birmingham and later became Dudley Road Hospital (now Birmingham City Hospital).

As I posted http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=752339.msg6009288#msg6009288
According to the 1889 Fire Insurance Plan 8 Bull Ring was occupied by a Pawnbroker, the building was 4 stories at the front and 3 stories behind, and shows that this was a dwelling (D), this was probably 8½
