Shields/Sweeney
« on: Saturday 26 August 17 14:29 BST (UK) »
A possible murder mystery to solve. Can anybody help me to trace the outcome of the death of Margaret Sweeney, married to Hugh Shields, in Gallowgate, Glasgow. Margaret was found dead "by violence" in the house on February 22nd 1897. The fact that the children ended up in Port of Mentieth with a "foster" family would indicate that Hugh was implicated in her death but I'm interested in what happened to him. Was he imprisoned? Any help would be appreciated.

There are a few newspaper reports in the days afterwards ( eg Scotsman) which indicate her husband Hugh was remanded on suspicion of assaulting her. He said she had come home drunk and fallen and hit her head on the fender. Can't see any reports of a subsequent trial, so maybe he wasn't charged.
