Dunlop's Manchester jubilee carnival queen
« on: Sunday 27 August 17 12:44 BST (UK) »
Does anyone have any information about Dunlops Rubber factory in Cambridge Street Manchester. My mother in law  May Bonney worked there in 1938 and was chosen as their jubilee carnival queen in 1938 and was crowned by the then outgoing cotton queen Doris Bowers. I am interested in any information people may have about this business or event.

Thanks for this. I had already had a good root around google but there is some basic info about the company but nothing about the cotton queen festival or any photos that I could find.

Sadly not even the Manchester images website has any of the festival, apart from the factory itself.

Hi, a bit from my own googling around..

1938 was the 50th anniversary (so Golden Jubilee) of the Dunlop Tyre, and it would appear there were commemorative events all over the country, wherever Dunlop had a major presence. Perhaps Dunlop Manchester decided to hold a carnival and appoint a Queen, which is where your mother-in-law came in.

Doris Bower or Bowers was from Bolton and was the Cotton Queen for 1937. The Cotton Queen competition was a Lancashire-wide event and was quite prestigious. Some information about Cotton Queens and Doris Bower here
http://www.boltonrevisited.org.uk/s-cotton-queens.html

So Doris Bower probably had no connection with Dunlop, but was appointed to crown the Dunlop Queen because she was a local celeb!

There might be something in local newspapers of the time; have you tried the free search at British Newspaper Archive?
