Frank Pepper, 1891 Census
« on: Sunday 27 August 17 16:33 BST (UK) »
Hello,

Would anyone be able to locate Frank for me? He was born in 1873, in Canada, although he believed he was born in the U.S. He grew up in Cambridge, and his family were living in Sevenoaks in 1891. He was a china and glass salesman, and later a shop manager.

Thanks,

Adam

1891 Wales Census:

John Hughes head 60
Margaret Hughes wife 60
Frank Pepper lodger 20 China Shop Assistant born Cambridge

Plas Road , Llandudno

Looks likely to me , even though the birthplace is wrong. ( As you say he grew up in Cambridge ).

Thanks to you both.

Frank E. Pepper is a different individual, and I have come across him before. The Welsh census is more likely. Thanks.

1901 he's in Lambeth, and 1911 in Eltham.

Adam,

What specific info are you after and what do you already have?

Hello,

I think I have found it now, thanks.

Frank's birth was not indexed, but he was born in August 1873 (according to his 1896 baptism at Newington). He did indeed marry Florence Harding in 1896, and I believe her parents were James W. and Sarah B. Harding, although this is based on a possible mistranscription by Frank for her birthplace in 1911. Other things, such as where her mother died also make sense, as both families were living in the same area (Newington). Their only child also had the middle name Sarah.

You've got the right 1901 record, and yes, his mother died in 1890, and the Peppers moved back to Cambridge by the end of 1891.

I think Frank and Florence might have had 2 daughters:

1903 Q1 Birth - Florence Sarah Irene Pepper (mmn: Harding); Southwark; 01d; 158
1904 Q4 Birth - Tryphena Ivy Lavinia Pepper (mmn: Harding); Croydon; 02a; 352
1904 Q4 Death - Tryphena Ivy Lavinia Pepper; age 3* (b1901); Wandsworth; 01d; 392

* Age from GRO's own index so ages could be days/weeks/months/years but FreeBMD has age zero so likely the age was days or weeks (as both registered in Q4).

The baptism for Tryphena, in Tooting Graveney, has parents as Frank and Florence.

Sorry, I meant only surviving daughter. I have the baptism record for T.I.L. Pepper on my phone.

Have you any idea where I might find confirmation of Florence's parents, without having to buy the marriage certificate?
