Two James MARRIOTTs - were they related?
« on: Monday 28 August 17 09:32 BST (UK) »
I'm looking for the parents and (hopefully) grandparents of William Marriott. Accoring to the 1861 census (RG9/2516 35 4&5) he was born in Swanwick about 1829. His wife, Ann, was born in Somercotes in 1833. They had two sons: John, born abt 1854 in Somercotes and William born abt 1856 in Riddings.

Using the GRO birth indexes, I'm assuming Somercotes appears under Mansfield and Riddings appears under Belper. However, I could not find a common mother's maiden name for these two boys comparing both registration districts. The nearest could be Hamilton which would fit with the marriage of William Marriott and Mary Hamilton in the Mansfield area 7b 113 (OND 1854)

Matters aren't made any easier by the way the 1851 census for Riddings has been collated. The most likely candidate is entered as "W", the son of widower James Marriott (54) (HO107/2145 526 22). Similarly there are 5 other "initialised" children - two born in Swanwick; three born in Somercotes.

The main reason for this search is a fascinating twist concerning the son William, born in 1856. He was married twice. His first wife was Hannah Wallis: and to date I have identified 10 children. After Hannah died, William married again - to Gertrude Mary Calladine. She was also a widow. Her husband Mark (apparently born Caswelldine) had moved from Staffordshire to South Normanton where he married Gertrude Mary Marriott. Whilst in Staffordshire Mark was living with his mother Emma and her third husband James Marriott. James Marriott was the brother of Gertrude Mary's mother - Hannah.

So, keeping all this in the family, can I prove a relationship between James (the probable grandfather of William (b 1856)) Marriott and James (the uncle of Gertrude Mary) Marriott?

Many thanks

Alan

Could be - I missed that marriage as she is listed in FreeBMD as Rothband

Maybe a stretch, but might that marriage registration page also be a clue to the "initialised" 1851 census I mentioned. One option from the same page is Francis Marriott married Ann Cutler. The 1861 census has a Francis and Ann Marriott in Ripley. Their youngest daughter is a 2 year old Lucy - which correspnds with a Lucy Marriott registered in the Belper District (7B 444 AMJ 1859) mother's maiden name - Cuttler.

In that 1851 census, 22 year old "W" is James Marriott's oldest son; 20 year old "F" is second oldest.

However I haven't found anything in the 1841 census which would correspond to this family of James Marriott

Francis Marriott married Ann Cutler at St Helen's Church on April 10th 1853
William Marriott married Ann Rathband at St Helen's Church on April 24th 1853.

Coincidence? or brothers? - are the Selston parish registers online anywhere? or could put a query on the Nottm forum

Hello Alan,

Just to help you cross one from your list. The marriage for William Marriott to Mary Hamilton in Mansfield Registration District - this couple married at Mansfield St Peters, Nottinghamshire - 13 Dec 1854.

( That William Marriott is on my tree, baptised 4th March 1832 in Mansfield, his parents were Thomas Marriott & Alice Robinson, married Mansfield St Peter'  16 Feb. 1817).

Marriages at Selston, Nottinghamshire.
10 April 1853 - Francis MARRIOTT & Ann CUTLER
24 April 1853 - William MARRIOTT & Ann RATHBAND

Note; The only baptisms for any Marriott's at Selston are in the 1760's one for a Thomas bapt 25 May 1760 parents Thomas & Anne Marriott - abode Alfreton parish.

If you can wait until later this week I can try to get the details for the Selston marriages.

Many thanks - that explains the 1851 census nicely. Another perinatal death methinks
