Was there a Register Office at Valley Anglesey?
« on: Monday 28 August 17 14:45 BST (UK) »
I have found information regarding a marriage that took place 12/3/1913 from the Groom's Military records and it states it took place at The Register Office, Valley, Anglesey. Does anyone know if there was a Register Office there at that time? On the Marriage Index there is a marriage registered at Holyhead that year, the Groom's name is correct, Bride's first name also correct but her surname is different.
Also would the information on this marriage be kept at the Anglesey Archive ? ???

I think that only parish registers are kept at archives;  for a Register Office marriage you need to buy the certificate.

If you contact the Registrar in Holyhead, he/she should know if there was ever an office at Valley.

An index of Anglesey marriages - transcribed from marriage records - has only one marriage dated 12/3/1913. This occurred at Moriah Chapel, Llangefni so is not a marriage which would have been registered at Holyhead.
(This marriage was between Richard Jones, 40, bach., farmer and Margaret Williams, 45, widow, dau. of Richard Edwards).

I can look for details of the marriage you refer to if you can supply the names you have.
Anglesey - Thomas:
Bodedern, Heneglwys, Llanfair-yn-Neubwll.
Anglesey - Jones:
Llanfaethlu, Llanfair-yn-Neubwll, Rhoscolyn.
Anglesey - Parry:Llanfair-yn-Neubwll.
Anglesey - Lewis:Llanbadrig.
Anglesey - Willins & Tyran/Tyrer

Caernarvonshire - Evans and Lewis:Llanberis.

Denbighshire - Jenkins:Llandynan, Llantysilio, Cerrigydrudion.
Denbighshire - Jones:Rhos, Ruabon.
Denbighshire - Jones:Henllan

Flintshire - Mathews:Northop

I presume that the marriage index that DragonT refers to is drawn from religious sources. However, Ellenmai, you clearly state that the marriage took place in a Register Office -- at Valley. I would think you will have to contact the Registration Service in Anglesey as they will be the only people (apart from the General Register Office, Southport) with access to Register Office weddings.

Was this the marriage? On 13 Mar 1913 at Holyhead Registry Office between Harold Lock, 21, b., hawker & horse dealer of Turkey Shore, Holyhead, son of John Lock, horse dealer and Louie Smith, 20, s, Turkey Shore, dau. of Dauval Smith, horse dealer.

Looks like the correct one from the military record, DT  - marriage recorded as 12th  at Valley   between the persons you have named.

Thank you all very much for your various responses  ;D

I sent an e-mail to the Anglesey Archive Friday and received a very quick reply this morning (Well done Anglesey Archive  :)) with the same details you found DragonT, could I ask where you got the information from? Is there any witness names on the record? Thank you so much for looking and finding it for me.
Harold's family were living at Turkey Shore, Holyhead on the 1911 Census so now I can research his family, but I can't find Louie's family anywhere  :'(

Diolch/Thank you all again
