Blyth, Northumberland
« on: Monday 28 August 17 15:08 BST (UK) »
An ancestor ran the Buffalo Hotel in Blyth, Northumberland, and then the Travellers Rest, also in Blyth. Anyone able to tell me (1) when did the Buffalo close as a pub and (2) when did the Travellers Rest close / demolished.
Many thanks
Allanuk

AllanUK, and chempat, Just noticed this post.  Have a look at 'Blyth History' here in the Northumberland section.  It is 39 pages long but you will find references to the Blyth pubs. And someone has posted a full list of the pubs in the Blyth area, as they once were.
The Buffalo, and The Traveller's Rest - I used them in the 1960s.
chempat, I have not had a look at your link, as yet, hopefully it might provide info what AllanUK is looking for.

there was an application for housing close to the site of the Travellers rest way back in 1995
and in 2003 permission was granted to turn it into flats

One landlord at The Traveller's Rest was called Williams, who was there in the early 1960s, and he and his family went on to run the Red House pub on Cowpen Estate.
AllanUK, If you post details of the surname(s) you are interested in, then you will more than likely get information which you are seeking.
Best of luck.

Hi Guys, thanks for your replies.

The website 'aboutblyth.co.uk/pubs-clubs' has a list which shows that the Travellers Rest was demolished in September 1998 after laying derelict for several years. This would indicate that it closed as a pub in the early 1990's.

From numerous sources, it would appear that the Buffalo Hotel closed in the 1970's. The building is now the Buffalo Community Centre which (from a newspaper article) has been there since (at least) 1980.
