Sea View from Brum?
« on: Tuesday 29 August 17 09:16 BST (UK) »
Just looking at WW 1 Attestation papers for a distant relative, Charles Carless (1892 - 1932). He enlisted in Birmingham, was born and lived in Birmingham for all of his life as far as I can see but his trade or occupation is listed as a Marine Dealer ???
As a born and bred brummie myself I know there's not much seaside around there so I wonder how much business he did. ;D

There was (and still may be) a Marine Supplies in Wolverhampton, which also seems unlikely. However, I suspect that this is connected with the local canal network - Brum, after all, is supposed to have more miles of canal than Venice.

Pauline, thanks for the link and looking at it, Stanmapstone (Who has provided many answers to my queries) gives a detailed explanation as to the trade description which makes Charles' trade completely understandable.
Thanks to everyone who replied to this thread.

There are a great many miles that make up the Birmingham Canal Navigations - I have travelled a most of them.

Someone had to supply the working boats.

In my home town of Chorley in Lancashire, there is a pub called "The Sea View". Strangers are dismissive about the name, as it is many miles inland, but on a clearish day, the slight hill on which it stands enables you to make out Blackpool Tower (about 20 miles away) quite easily.

Similarly, those headed north up the M6 can get their first glimpse of Blackpool Tower by looking left just after Charnock Richard services.
Looking at ALSTON in south Ribble area, ALSTEAD and DONBAVAND/DUNBABIN etc. everywhere, HOWCROFT and MARSH in Bolton and Westhoughton, PICKERING in the Whitehaven area.
