Burial at Dumfries in 1750s. The parish register says Dumfries.

I am confused about the graveyards and cemeteries in Dumfries.  Would burials in the 1750s have been at  St Michael's in Dumfries, and if so is it one of these cemeteries please?

Hello hurworth,

Yes, the burial would have been in St Michael's graveyard. The older graves stones still exist and some are in good condition.

Thank you Jo.  I think the graveyard has been entered twice on Findagrave.

Hi, St Michael's is still in existence and is arguably the most visited graveyard in Scotland due to Robert Burns being buried there. However, St Michaels Craigs Road is a newer cemetery nearby. Don't get mixed up.

Ian

Yes, I saw that Rabbie Burns is buried there.  I'm trying to put together a list of graves of interest for a reunion.  The Veitches (Rev William and his wife Marion) are on the list and Rabbie would be a bonus.

I need to pop along to the Family History Centre and check what it actually says on the page for this burial:
VEITCH
ELIZTH
MCCULLOCH / OSWALD MCCULLOCH
28/07/1731

William and Marion's daughter Elizabeth married David McCulloch of Ardwall and her Testament Dative in 1732 says she died July last.  Perhaps this is her.

I am attaching p 358 from The Memorials of St Michaels, written around 1880 by William McDowall
