Many thanks, Janis, these are all going to fit together one day ...

I've only found 3 children for Thomas Coulson and Jane Wake - Jane 1813, Hannah 1816 and George 1818 - all bapt Haughton le Skerne, which fits with their mother's age. Jane would be 36, 39 and 41 so you wouldn't expect a lot of children. They're all living together in Southwark in 1841 plus grandson Thomas Coulson (daughter Jane's son) born 1837 Stokesley.

Thomas Coulson, the father, is equally as mysterious. Born ca 1777 according to his death in 1837 in Southwark, the best fit I can find is the Thomas Coulson bapt 25 May 1777 in Aycliffe.

Thanks for your feedback - I do appreciate it!

Thanks fiddlerslass, that's a great piece of the puzzle. I knew about Henry Coulson (son of Thomas Coulson and Dorothy Shaw) and even had a Thomas Coulson who was born ca 1755 before that marriage. To know he was a half brother is a great lead. Now to find his parents and work forward from there.

Thanks also for the will - I didn't know they were on Familysearch.

Hi Jan,
So Thomas the half brother is definitely older than Henry, as Dorothy Coulson, nee SHAW, widow of Thomas was buried at Houghton in 1805. I think therefore that Thomas of the will is still living in Houghton in 1841, so cannot be the one in London.

1841 HO107/304/9/13 Houghton Le Skerne
all born Durham

Thomas COULSON 86
Margaret  "           35
Thomas   "            6

Thanks fiddlerslass, yes I can rule out that Thomas.

I had a look at the wills on familysearch but could only browse. How did you manage to find Henry's will?
