Henry North of Liverpool, UK, born 1836
« on: Wednesday 30 August 17 12:38 BST (UK) »
Henry North was born in Liverpool, UK in 1836, son of John North (an attorney) and his wife Ellen.
In 1864 Henry was married to Adah Mann, and their first son, Lowry William, was born two years later.  A second son Samuel followed in 1867.  Adah died in 1869, and it is believed that the sons were looked after by relatives, while Henry is understood to have left for the United States.

Lowry is understood to have emigrated to New Zealand.

The sons are proving hard to trace in UK census material, but the aim of this post is to ask if the fate of Henry North is known to anyone in the United States.  I realise this is an outside chance, but RootsChat has been a great source for me and others in the past.

Thanks for a rapid reply.  The occupation Henry had on the 1861 and '71 census was 'insurance broker', but if he was making for a new life he might have put anything down.  We cannot rule him out!

There are several Henry Norths from England in the 1880 US census. The most likely candidate is a 40 year old stockbroker, a widower, who is boarding at 463 West 21st Street in New York.

Thank you,ShaunJ.  That seems a more likely occupation for Henry than gardener.

Presumably you have this from Alumni Cantabrigienses:

"NORTH, LOWRY WILLIAM. Adm. pens. (age 18) at Jesus, Oct. 1885. S. of Henry, Esq. [of London, and the U.S.A.]. B. at Wallasey, Cheshire. School, Radley. Matric. Michs. 1885. Football (assoc.) ' blue,' 1888. A sheep-farmer in New Zealand."

Lowry came back to the UK for a while in 1909 and you should be able to find him in the 1911 census.

Great finds, thanks again.  I had most of that info on Lowry, the elder son but am also seeking the younger son Samuel, birth regn Andover, Hants, Q3 1867.  Nothing found so far.

What about the first child Ellen (1865)? What happened to her?
