John Favel, you have a choice although it might be the same John:
1825 Buckden Ann Gaunt
1828 Buckden Ann Maile
Or it might be neither!

The source is Hunts Marriage Index, available from Hunts FHS. It's not available online.

Thanks for bringing me into the 21st century John. Once a dinosaur, always a dinosaur.

Yet a search on FindMyPast for a George Abbot or Rebecca Favel or John Favel marriage in Hunts misses the marriages on Hunts Marriage Index on fiche. I'm bemused (I don't think the Index is searchable by name. You apparently have to go into their database and scroll through the images. But as I'm not a FindMyPast subscriber I can't test it. But the Hunts Marriage Index on fiche is the Layng index)

On the 1841 census return for John there is a William, aged 2. A child therefore born in the period of BMD registration, which should be able to solve the mystery of the mother's maiden name. Or so I thought!

The only William FAVILL I can find born in Huntingdonshire on the GRO web site is:

William FAVEILL b Q1 1838 Peterborough 15 347 [MMN HAWLEY] - not GAUNT or MAILE!

By the way, John and Ann can be traced in Buckden in 1851, 1861 and 1871. Ann died before the 1881 census, where John is recorded as a widower. He died later in 1881 in Buckden.

ADDITION

There is a male FAVILL recorded b Q3 1838 St Neots 14 195 [MMN GAUNT]. This seems more likely.

Yes David, those FindMyPast Hunts marriages are not indexed... they are just browsable page by page, although you can get it to start at a particular letter.

John, With my failing eyesight it's getting more and more difficult to read the fiche using a 20x magnifying glass, so the Index being on FindMyPast is a step in the right direction. I subscribe to Ancestry and don't like FindMyPast so don't have an annual sub, but if they have a £1 for a month offer I do take advantage of it, mainly to look at the newspaper clippings.

Another child for John and Ann:

John FAVILL b Q2 1843 St Neots 14 237 [MMN Gaunt].

Given that the marriage to Ann Gaunt was in 1825 and the one to Ann Maile was in 1828, I think we conclude that the John captured in the census records married Ann Gaunt.

However, how do we know that the John captured in the census records was the one born to Stephen and Sarah?
