Where was John Houlston in 1861,1871 and 1881
« on: Friday 01 September 17 11:56 BST (UK) »
John Houlston appears on the 1841 census as one of five (presumably single) young men all Ag labs living at the Birmingham Botanical garden in Edgbaston. His age is given as 25 (rounded) and he is not bic.
He is a witness to the will of David Cameron curator of the BBG and when he is granted probate he is described as of Royal Botanic Garden Kew.
In 1851, John Houlston (birth year abt 1813), wife Elizabeth and two sons William 2 and Alfred 4 months are living in Kew. John's occupation is gardener and his pob is Leamington (?), Staffordshire. So that all matches up. The two sons birth regs on GRO have Taylor as mmn.
There is a marriage in Birmingham on 3 Oct 1847 between John Houlston gardener, (bac, full age) s/o William Houlston, farmer and Elizabeth Taylor (sp, full age) d/o Joseph Taylor, farmer. Witnesses, William Houlston and Jane Taylor. Abode of both bride and groom is Edgbaston Street.

Can anyone find John, Elizabeth and children in 1861, 1871 or 1881.
I have him in 1891 in St Georges Hanover Square with adult children Horace and Beatrice, although he is now an innkeeper, and pob is different, the two new children also have mmn Taylor, so I think it must be the same person

Have you see that some staff records for Kew Gardens are available.  I don't know if that is online though

Thank you both, that was quick. I had tried a few wild card searches but the records completely eluded me. I wonder why he changed from a gardener at Kew to a licensed victualler? Maybe the work as too physically demanding as he got older.

He's still a gardener, but a domestic one so must have left Kew.

I have found a reference to him here

https://issuu.com/kewguildjournal/docs/v1s2p1-all
pages 46 and 47.
Seems he was a foreman of Orchids and ferns. From the quote it implies he had a Scottish accent. A bit odd if he came from Staffordshire. Not yet found a baptism for him.
