You might find something on TROVE,   www.trove.nla.gov.au
especially if the Communist connection was the cause, it may have made the news ??? ???

Gaol in Sydney in the 1930s would most likely have been Long Bay Gaol though could have been Darlinghurst Gaol - assuming he was in a Sydney gaol.  Others to think of would be Maitland or Goulburn.
