Ryslaw and Whinkerstones Farms, Fogo
« on: Saturday 02 September 17 18:56 BST (UK) »
My direct 'Jeffrey' ancestors seem to have flourished in blacksmithing in the Fogo area. They were 'smiths' on the Whinkerstones Farm from 1680-1695, and then on the Ryslaw (Riselaw) Farm from 1697-1755. In fact, it seems that from 1697 into the 1820s, members of the same Jeffrey family were 'smiths' in Ryslaw.
I know next to nothing about these two farms in the Fogo parish. Would anyone have any information (description, crops, livestock, size, inhabitants, etc.) about these farms that they could share?

Hi there.

A brief description of Whinkerstones Farm from the 1850s here http://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/berwickshire-os-name-books-1856-1858/berwickshire-volume-20/24

You could also search on https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search/results?st=Whinkerstones for other records that might offer details on the farm.

As above, from the same site, some details on Ryslaw here https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/digital-volumes/ordnance-survey-name-books/berwickshire-os-name-books-1856-1858/berwickshire-volume-20/36

Land tax rolls here https://scotlandsplaces.gov.uk/search/results?st=Ryslaw

Check also on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk and the Wills & testament databases. There are references to both Ryslaw and Whinkerstones. To pick up on different spellings, use the wildcard for place name by typing in Rys*law as it will also show as Ryselaw.

See also this old post on another forum www.ancestry.com/boards/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=2474&p=localities.britisles.scotland.bew.general

You should be able to find further details through www.bordersfhs.org.uk

And following Monica's post http://catalogue.nrscotland.gov.uk/nrsonlinecatalogue/welcome.aspx enter the name in the search box and you will see the transactions/ownership covering the 17th C.
