Not just Scottish!
And not always mother's maiden name - in my tree it tends to be maternal grandmother's maiden name

Yes I figured that too! I have found an incoming passengers record in 1915 for Jane Gordon Robinson with her mother and siblings coming back from Quebec, Canada. Can't actually see a record for them going outwards, I am wandering where the father is at this point?! \

I also can't find any record of this family in the 1901 or 1911 census (presuming they may be in Canada in 1911)

Parents William GORDON and Jane McCUTCHEON

It might be worth trying to contact them to see if they have the 1902 M/C.

You can see the image of the 1911 Canada Census on the Library and Canada Archives site -the surname has been transcribed as Roberson. John Robinson is a miner and the year of emigration is given as 1908.
