Christopher Harry Gower. 6th airbourne division ww2
« on: Sunday 03 September 17 12:21 BST (UK) »
My father was in the Normandy landings in the 6th airbourne division. We have just obtained his war records .
He is mentioned in a book called Dropzone Normandy by Napier Crookenden.Where could  he have got the information about my dad from as none of this is mentioned in his records. Is there more information available other than the records. Any help would be appreciated

Yes I saw those when I was looking him up a while ago now. How would he have got all his information for his books. Surely its recorded somewhere

Do his records state what unit within the Airborne Division he was in?

Hello Karen

There are 90 search returns for 6 Airborne files and records at just The National Archives, Kew.

Some names will appear in their Unit records, War Diaries and possibly files, etc.

http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/results/r?_ep=6%20Airborne&_dss=range&_sd=1939&_ed=1945&_ro=any&_hb=tna&_st=adv

Some of these authors and very serious researchers may have spent 10 years or more, researching at The National Archives and various Archives and Museums around the country, like the IWM; Churchill College Cambridge; Liddell Hart Archives; etc and writing to Veterans and their Associations, to get the facts and first hand accounts.

Is there any footnote number in the text, referring to a file reference, or source?

If you do go to an Archives, make sure you have all the required formal proofs of your identity and your current address.

Sometimes an Author gives his town or village of residence in the front or back and you can trace them or contact his publisher who may pass on a letter from you, if you enclose a stamped blank envelope.

Hope you find the record/s, it is very interesting to trace your relative in records, including tracing documents in private hands, sometimes now in the possession of Sons and Daughters of Veterans.

Mark
