Thank you all for the great response. Yes ShaunJ that is the bit that is mentioned about him. We found the book after he passed away so he never knew he was mentioned.  He would tell us the stories of his war years but as kids we never really listened. Now I would love to know. He was in the 6th airbourne division, 3rd brigade . I think the unit was 716 .?  the records are numbers and letters to me sorry. I will be checking all the info you guys have given. Thanks once again

Looking at other references that Corporal Gower seems to be a "Gus" Gower ?.

"As the 9th Battalion gun crews were knocked out, so other Paras, not primarily gunners, took their places, as they did also in mortar platoons. Sergeant Hennessey and towering Corporal 'Gus' Gower together with untrained mortar men kept up .."

There's a photo of Gus Gower in The Day the Devils Dropped In: The 9th Parachute Battalion in Normandy:   https://goo.gl/Bb8rwS

And a letter from Gus Gower of the Parachute Regiment in Flight International, March 27 1969 - a Hoxton born lorry driver. https://www.flightglobal.com/pdfarchive/view/1969/1969%20-%201730.html?search=hoxton

Drop me a message if you'd like me to look at his service records and I'll give you my email address so you can scan a copy to me, if they are his service records I should be able to tell you what units he was with and when.
