William GARDNER, born 1841 Wheelton, Lancashire

I wonder if anyone can resolve my confusion.

William GARDNER's convict documents state that his mother was Alice HARTLEY, the wife of James HARTLEY who Alice GARDNER had married on 13/04/1846.........but Alice GARDNER was apparently William's eldest sister, born in 1823!!! Their parents were Thomas GARDNER and his wife Sarah (nee BENTLEY).

I have a theory    Was William GARDNER Alice GARDNER's illegitimate son    I can find no evidence that would make it so!!

What information does the marriage certificate for Alice & James give for Alice's father

Alices mother is Sarah Gardner nee Bentley, her father is Thomas Gardner

How can they be siblings

I used the word "apparently" regarding William and Alice being siblings based on information gleaned from Ancestry's Public Member Trees.......the Owners of which, sadly, have not responded to my enquiries.

Hence, my faith in RootsChat!!

In theory this is the only thing we should trust then

I think it was probably September not April they married.

In 1851 James & Alice have Alice's children William Gardner age 9 bn Wheelton & Sarah Gardner age 7 born Houghton   H0107/2266 f355 p2

Are you of the opinion that my theory may be correct     The Trees I have reviewed show William and Sarah, as they appear in the 1851 Census,  carrying the matronym "GARDNER".
