Help locating a marriage
« on: Monday 04 September 17 08:17 BST (UK) »
Hi everyone
I'm after some help
I have William Button born 1747 in Warehorne Kent.
He was baptised on 16/8/1747 in Warehorne with parents given as Samuel and Elizabeth Button.
It is the marriage of Samuel and Elizabeth I can't find.
Their  oldest child was Elizabeth born in 1744 Warehorne so the marriage happened sometime before then.
Samuel and Elizabeth will be my 6X great grandparents when I identify them correctly.
Public trees on ancestry have copied each other's information and have Elizabeth as Elizabeth Hinge but have no date or proof of the marriage. I am looking for evidence this is correct before adding any information to my tree.
Thanks for your help

Hi panda40,

Samuel Button is my husband's 5x Great Grandfather. We began researching the family in the 1970s and have not been able to get back past Samuel & Elizabeth. I am very sceptical about Elizabeth Hinge who seems to have been from Wateringbury and I cannot find any evidence to confirm that she is Samuel's wife.

You mention that you have their oldest child as Elizabeth born in 1744 in Warehorne. I have some earlier children :

Thomas b 1739 Warehorne buried 5 Jan 1789 Warehorne
Ann b 1740 Warehorne d 1742 Warehorne
Samuel b 1741 Warehorne d 1814 Woodchurch
Richard b 1743 Warehorne
If you haven't seen it there is a useful will extract which lists Samuel's children still living at the time of his death in 1800:

Sorry I can't offer any real help , except to agree that I can't find the marriage of a Samuel Button to Elizabeth Hinge . I've been stuck at this point for 40 years ! ???

Thanks Christine
It's good to know I'm not the only one struggling. I will try and get to Maidstone archives next month to see if I can locate anything else. If I do I'll let you know.
