South Staffs / Medals
« on: Monday 04 September 17 15:49 BST (UK) »
Hi

Does anyone know what these medals are for?  They were among my Grandfather's belongings.  He signed up in July 1918.

We understand that according to the records he was not deployed overseas but we found an account of some events with the medals (they could even belong to someone else).
Many thanks.

On the left is the British War Medal; on the right is the Victory Medal.
Known as "Mutt & Jeff" together!

There should be a name, number and regiment inscribed around the edge?

Squeak and Wilfred.

To qualify for either he had at least to have served overseas even if not in a theatre of war.  What were the records that purport to say he didn't serve overseas?

If they don't have his name engraved they may be replicas, they look in remarkably good nick.

Only Squeak & Wilfred if Pip (1914 or 1914-15 Star) is there as well - otherwise Mutt & Jeff.

All originals were engraved on the rim with the recipient's name, number and regiment.

I would have though it unlikely that they were awarded to your grandfather, if he was conscripted in July 1918 as it is unlikely (but not impossible) that he went overseas, which he would have to have done to earn these.

If he was conscripted on or about his 18th birthday (as many were in 1918) it is even less likely that be earned the medals - you had to be 18½ before being sent overseas.

They look like miniatures? As as been mentioned previously if they are full size they should be impressed on the rims.

Thank you everyone.  My cousin had the medals - I'll ask him to look for any inscriptions.

Ask him to check whether they are full size or miniatures.
