Barton Borough in Kent
« on: Monday 04 September 17 16:02 BST (UK) »
Dear All,

Does anyone know where the borough of Barton is?

In the 1664 Hearth Tax Barton is listed in the Hundred of Kinghamford in the lath of St Augustine.  The village listed just before is Shelninge(??) and after is Kingston (SE of Canterbury).

I have not had much luck with Google!

Thanks in advance

Try this:
http://www.british-history.ac.uk/survey-kent/vol12/pp228-251#h3-0003

Says it is within, or connected to, Langport
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Shelninge Borough is probably the hamlet now called Shelvin, east of Denton. Sir Basil Dixwell lived at Broome, just north of Denton, so this may be Barton borough. Were you looking for someone there? This is my area, so I may be able to help.

Hi

I am looking for John Rammell. He is listed in the hearth tax for Barton. He may have come from Nonnington, just going on possible year of birth. I can find no marriage or burial.

Sir Basil Dixwell is also listed in the hearth tax in Barton.

Thanks

There is another possible baptism at Shepherdswell, also 1633, John Ramill, son of Thomas. A Thomas Ramwell is listed in the Hearth Tax in S'well. Have you seen the original of the Nonington baptism? I think the father is Edward, who may be in the Hearth Tax list in Goodnestone. Not sure if this helps or adds to the confusion!

Hi

Yes I have both those Johns, the one from Nonington b1634 son of Edward & Iden and the second from Sheperdswell b1633 & d1633 son of Thomas & Elizabeth. I don't know what became of the first John b1634, no marriage or burial. The only record I have found is the hearth tax of a John Rammell in Barton. Edward was living in Easole Street, Nonington  and Thomas in Shepherdswell according to the Hearth Tax. The Edward b 1639 in Goodnestone is the son of Edward (Easole street).

The Edward were carpenters. Maybe John was too.

Regards
