Confused by Alice SMITH/SNAPE
« on: Monday 04 September 17 19:41 BST (UK) »
While looking for the parents of a Jane SMITH, who married Thomas Sidebottom 1870 Staleybridge, Cheshire, I consulted the census, and this has me confused:
The 1861 census of Hyde, Stockport, Cheshire has a
-Alice SMITH, head, married, born 1826; and
-Jane SMITH, daughter, born 1847.  [and three other children]
These data fit well what I already knew. But:
The 1871 census for Newton, Ashton under Lyne, Lancashire has
-Alice SNAPE, head, widow, born 1826; and
-Jane Sidebottom and her husband Thomas [and the same three children as in 1861.]

I then found a marriage of Alice SMITH and John Edward SNAPE, on 3 Dec 1845, in Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire.  So it seems that mother Alice in 1861 used her maiden name, and her children also had her maiden name SMITH, but in 1871 she uses the name SNAPE, but her children are still SMITH.

Any ideas what this means?

Marriage -

Jane Smith
1870, Parish of Stayley
Father - James Smith
Spouse - Thomas Sidebottom
Spouse Father's name -Thomas Sidebottom

With the details above it would appear that John Edward SNAPE is not the father of Jane Smith.

Don't think you have the correct marriage - more likely is that Alice Smith married Thomas Snape Sep quarter 1866 Stockport . In other words she was widowed twice between 1861 and 1871.

Marriage in the Parish Church of Stockport July 8 1866

Thomas Snape widower hatter Croft St Hyde Father Thomas Snape ,Hatter

Hi Millmoor,

But given that Jane has the surname Smith when she marries Thomas Snape, and that her father's name is Smith as well, does that mean that her first marriage was to a Smith as well?

I am still a bit confused...
