Higgs of Trysull possible family connection?
« on: Tuesday 05 September 17 08:14 BST (UK) »

Hi, everyone  ;D

I believe I may have found some interesting information that may link my ancestor Elizabeth Higgs to the Higgs of Trysull, Staffordshire but I need some documentation or firm evidence to clarify this.

I'll include all the information I've uncovered which I hope may help:

This I know:
Marriage
John Stafford (Bach') & Elizabeth Higgs (Spins')
30 Dec 1793, All Saint's church, Sedgley, Staffordshire
Both of this Parish.
By Banns.
Witnesses: William Wooley & Ann Hardral - Hardnal? (very hard to read)
Groom signs x (others sign)
(source freereg)

They settle in Dudley and have a family all baptised in Dudley except one including the eldest son named Stephen.

John's occupation is a malster and appears on his youngest child's marriage certificate in 1837.

I believe this is the death entry of Elizabeth Higgs:
Elizabeth Stafford of Dudley Buried 5 Dec 1841, St Thomas's church, Dudley aged 62 (born abt 1779).
(source freereg)

I believe Elisabeth Higgs is related to the Higgs family of Trysull, Staffordshire.

Possible Bapt'
1 Sept 1776, Trysull, Staffordshire
Joseph & Elizabeth
Elizabeth Higgs
(source freereg)

One of Elizabeth's sibling was named Stephen and Stephen was used by the Higgs family going back 5 generations that I've found. The family's occupation for generations seemed to have been Millers/Malsters.

I also found a bapt entry which interested me:

John & Elizabeth Stafford
3 Sept 1797, Trysull, Staffordshire
Elizabeth Stafford
(source freereg)

I found the will of Elizabeth Higgs of Trysull dated 1825 and she mentions her children including Elizabeth but annoying it doesn't state any married names.

Anyone else researching the Higgs of Trysull or anyone any ideas on I could progress further?

Any help would be great and does it seem like I'm onto a possible connection? (fresh pair of eyes and all that  ;D)

Kind regards
Adrian

Have you discounted this burial in Trysull
Elizabeth Higgs
Burial 17 Jul 1793
Burial place All Saints, Trysull,

ADDED  You may need to eliminate her as Joseph's wife, maybe there is a gravestone  :-\

If the Elizabeth Stafford burial at age 62 in Dec 1841 giving a birth year of 1779 is your Elizabeth Higgs it would mean that she was only 14 when she married John Stafford in Dec 1793 - maybe a bit young so a Sept 1776 baptism (at Trysull) is a better fit.

That Elizabeth should also appear on the 1841 which will tell you if she was born in County or not.

I couldn't find her listed on the 1841 census anywhere, Trish?

This isn't Joseph's wife because she wrote her will in 1818 but also the Elizabeth buried 1793 can't be her daughter because she leaves her daughter Elizabeth monies in her will written 1818. Oddly I couldn't find a burial for Elizabeth around 1818-1825?

Kind regards

I agree and have found the age of those recorded died are usually out by 5 years or so. The Bapt 1776 could still be correct.
