I think that a lot of them were purchased by relatives?

Some of them, at least, are on display on Plymouth Hoe.  The installation is called "Wave".

Maybe there are or will be other installations around the country at different times.  It was possible to buy individual poppies, I believe, but maybe more have been made.  The "Wave" is certainly not as big as the Tower of London installation.

Mine was a gift and I have digitally planted it on the map.   :)

I think that the ones in the moat were sold but the "Wave/Window" appear to have been bought by these organisations:

The original installation was conceived of as transitory, the sea of poppies growing in size until the final one was planted on 11 November 2014. On completion, however, it was agreed that the works of art at the heart of this broader act of memorial should be preserved for the nation. 14-18 NOW is grateful to the Backstage Trust and Clore Duffield Foundation for their support in securing these sculptures for posterity.

Wave and Weeping Window will continue to be on view at selected locations around the UK, arriving at IWM North and IWM London in the autumn of 2018. The sculptures will then be gifted to the Imperial War Museums.

My understanding is that extras were not produced;  just one for each "British and Colonial" soldier who died.

I saw The Wave st Yorkshire Sculpture Park in early 2016. I bought one too for my great uncle who died May 1915 after 3 months in France aged 21. I have 'planted'  the poppy in the garden as a virtual grave for him as he has no known grave.
