Thank you Josey and nanny jan.
It is so sad that so many young people died and never had the opportunity to live their full life, marry, have children and I think especially when you research your family history these people do not have descendants to research 'their' life.

Beautiful - I had NO idea the poppies had travelled so far. What an achievement; usually these installations are so London centric.

I found "The Shrouds of the Somme" installation just as moving, but in a different way.  It brought you face to face with the physical bodies of the 19,240 soldiers killed on the first day of the battle of the Somme.

Thank you so much for this link Gillg.  I sat in my office this afternoon so moved and weepy.  Then a few things triggered in my head about long forgotten research I'd done on my nan's first husband they were only very young and married for about 6 months when he was killed.  He will be one of the men commemorated in the big exhibition.  I have contacted the site owner and said I have a photo of him so thank you once again.  Lest We Forget.

I wasn't able to visit, but here's a link to 'Weeping Window' on the winding gear, known as No. 1 Heapstead, at the former Woodhorn Colliery in Northumberland.

https://www.1418now.org.uk/commissions/poppies-weeping-window-at-woodhorn-museum/

Quote: Woodhorn Colliery played a major part to the war effort, not only for coal production, but also supplying skilled miners for the front. From the minute books of the Ashington Coal Company we have established that from a workforce of over 9000, nearly 2500 were serving within the armed forces and, by the beginning of 1917, around 250 had lost their lives.

I think that a lot of them were purchased by relatives?

One at least is on display in our conservatory.  My family made only a peripheral contribution to WW1: a lad who would have been a great-uncle was killed by a train during training in the south of England, so didn't even get to the real war; and my grandfather's merchant ship was torpedoed off Greece in 1917 but he was rescued with all but three of the crew.
