George Alfred Rivers
« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 17:48 BST (UK) »
I am researching George Alfred Rivers who lost his life when the battle-cruiser HMS Indefatigable was sunk during the Battle of Jutland-May 31 1916.  He had joined the Royal Navy in 1913 and was Stoker 1st Class K/17996.  He was the son of Ada C. Cresswell (formerly Rivers), of 3, James St., Brithdir, Cardiff, and the late Benjamin Rivers.

In 1911, Benjamin and Ada and 9 children were residents of 1 Philip Street, Philips Marsh, Bristol; George was age 17.  Sometime later they relocated to the Tirphil, New Tredegar area of South Wales.  It would appear Benjamin died 1917 with death registered in Merthyr Tydfil district.  Ada remarried to Edwin Cresswell in 1918 and subsequently moved to James Street, Brithdir.

Other than what is on the CWGC site I failed to find any reference to the death of George Alfred Rivers in local papers (WalesonLine) for Brithdir and the Rhymney Valley.  His name is not remembered on local war memorials.  I wonder if anyone in the Bristol area know of any monument that remembers his name with honour and/or knowledge of a newspaper that reported on his death.

Thank you for taking interest however the CWGC details is already in the initial post.  I should have explained in more depth that what I am after is a village/town/city war memorial other than the Plymouth Monument.  And a newspaper snippet (hopefully) with a picture of the young man (23) and possibly some information.
Regards, Roy

The link below contains a list of the people who lost their lives on the HMS Indefatigable in 1916.

http://www.northeastmedals.co.uk/britishguide/jutland/hms_indefatigable_casualty_list_1916.htm

To find George you need to scroll down almost to the bottom and his name is on the right hand column.  These men are listed in alphabetical order.

Have you considered writing to the local church where he lived to see if they have any war memorials of any kind?
