Sailor 1880 - Charles Webb
« on: Wednesday 06 September 17 18:22 BST (UK) »
I have a photo of my great grandad as a sailor. Please follow the link below, I don't know any other way to upload it.

Can any body tell me anything about it. The uniform perhaps, the ship, the group, the date, etc. I would guess around 1880, but I know nothing more.
Thanks for any help.

There's a Royal Navy record for Charles Webb born Clerkenwell 28 December 1861. Served from 1877 to 1888.  Might that be him?

Thanks Shaunj. This must be him. He was christened on 8 February 1863 in Bristol, but his brother was born in Clerkenwell in 1870 so he would have been living there too. The christening date fits near enough. It could even be Feb 1862 which would make sense.

How can I find out more? Ships, places, dates, etc.

Thanks again.

Tony

You can view the record on Ancestry or download it from the National Archives http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D6632677

Thanks Shaunj
He appears to have been in the cells twice for 7 days! Would this have been unusual? He was paid off once. What would that mean? Finally he was invalided out. Is there a way of dinding out why?
Thanks for all help anyone.
