Robert Dagger - Help in locating him in the 1851, 61 and 71 censuses.
« on: Thursday 07 September 17 02:55 BST (UK) »
Trying to find out about the early life of my GGG-Grandfather Robert Dagger. I have two pieces of concrete information.
The earliest is his marriage on August 23rd 1871 to Eliza Priscilla Barrow in Christ Church, Blackpool. Both are of full age. Bachelor and Spinster. His father is William Dagger a Labourer, the witnesses are George Waring and Jane Greaves.

Some more clues as to his origins are found in the 1881 census. He is now head of the household in Bury, having moved there sometime between the Christening of their eldest my GG-Grandmother Elizabeth in January 1872, again in Christ Church and the birth of their next child who is born in Bury in 1875.
The details from Elizabeth's Christening are that Robert is a Labourer as per his marriage and that their abode is 'Blackpool'.
On the '81 census Robert gives his age as 32 (so 1849) and birthplace is 'Plunton, Lancashire' - There is no such place I believe in the Fylde area. Google search suggests Plumpton. Seems a likely mistranscribe to me.
Just to add, his wife and her family come from the (Great) Marton area of Blackpool.

Nothing else to go on. Hope that is enough to locate him.

Thank you very much,

Jonathan

This looks probable in 1861 at Pointer Lane, Woodplumpton

William Dagger    42    Wrea Green Kirkham, Lancashire (Groom)
Jane Dagger    34    Wrea Green Kirkham
Robert Dagger   12    Wrea Green Kirkham

RG09/3144 / 44

Though there is also this Robert with father William at Weeton (Robert's age is a bit out, so I think the above is more likely)

William Dagger       39    Kirkham, Lancashire (Labourer)
Elizabeth Dagger   36    Kirkham
Robert Dagger      16    Kirkham
Mary Dagger      13    Kirkham
Josias Dagger       9    Kirkham
Elizabeth Dagger    2    Kirkham
Jane Dagger       6m    Kirkham

RG09/3146 / 46

Actually, reading your post again, maybe the second census at Weeton is more likely as the occupation of Robert's father matches what is on Robert's marriage cert?

If this is the correct family, the children were registered with mother's maiden name BENNETT. Robert's registration Sept qtr 1844 Fylde 21/413.

I suspect the Robert at Wrea Green is not your Robert, as he seems to be on later censuses with wife Jane. There were however 4 Robert DAGGERs birth registered between 1844 and 1849 at Fylde, though I think there is only the 2 in my previous post with father William.

There is also this possible 1851 at Westby with Plumpton
William Dagger  29  Marton
Elizabeth Dagger 27 Westby
Robert Dagger   6    Westby
Mary Dagger     3     Westby

Robert and Eliza's children are:

Definite - Elizabeth (b1871 Blackpool)
                 Thomas William (b1875 Bury)
                 John (b1877 d1881 both Bury)
                 James Henry (b1880 Bury)

Highly likely but not 100% sure due to family being broken up after death of Eliza in 1888.

Margaret Alice (b1882 d1885 both Bury)
Charles (b1885 Bury)
LOUGHLIN - Galway, Ireland/Heywood, Lancs
HOWARTH - Rochdale
IVES - Rochdale. Originally Thurlstone, WR Yorkshire
BRIDGENS - Rochdale via Stourbridge
JACKSON - Prescot
PENKETH - Prescot

KNIGHT - Rochdale via Holme, Huntingdonshire
BARROW - Marton,Blackpool
DAGGER - Blackpool

Margaret Alice DAGGER b 1882 at Bury has mother's maiden name BARROW, as does Charles b 1885, so I would say definitely yours.  ;)

Try Poulton as the place of birth Residence could be Staining with Newton

There are some Daggers buried at St Chads Church Poulton-le-Fylde

2 Members of the Dagger Family are listed a killed during WW1

My Mother was named after her GM Jane Dagger

Hope you find the above helpful
