What became of John Skinner
« on: Friday 08 September 17 05:24 BST (UK) »
John Skinner b1847 St Austell s/o Thomas Skinner and Elizabeth Tonkin.
His father died 1853. His mother remarried Nicholas Harry in 1856.
1861 Census lists him as John S Harry. Cannot find him on later Census St Austell.
I am considering he may have travelled to California with related Henry Harry. Both likely on 1870 Census Township 1 , Amador Co, California , having travelled "City of Washington" Liverpool to New York 1865.
Henry Harry returned to St Austell 1874 in time to marry. He became innkeeper "Seven Stars Inn".

I am trying to determine what became of John Skinner perhaps also known as John Skinner Harry.

Thank you Kay.
Your scenario looks very promising.
The timing would be right assuming that John Skinner was with Henry Harry in California. They had time to return to St Austell for their respective marriages.
John must have reverted to his birth surname of Skinner.

I have checked the 1891 Census. He is still at the same address with wife , three children and a servant.
The hunt for gold must have been successful .

Many thanks.

Very clever of you Kay.
It dawned on me that when I was researching Henry Harry , I noticed that a John Skinner had apparently gone to California with him.
Henry Harry was a brother of my great grandfather.
John Hammer Harry ( my great grandfather ) and Nicholas Harry ( step father of John Skinner ) were all brothers.

Thank you.A great result.

Kay
East Hill St Austell was the address of the "Severn Stars Inn".
If John Skinner was next door 1881 they may have been part of the same business.? Skinner was a grocer according to the Census.
