The large parish of Rochdale was apparently divided into 4 quarters
Spot land in the NW
Hundresfield in the NE
Butterworth in the SE
Castleton in the SW

So I suppose it would be of Littleborough in the quarter of Hundresfield in the parish of Rochdale
Brilliant!  Thanks very much - that explains it.

possible burial for Thomas & Elizabeth & Martha

Burial: 5 Mar 1851 St Thomas, Barrowford, Lancashire, England
 Elizabeth Stephenson -
     Age: 19
     Abode: Barrowford
Buried by: Robert S Weldon Curate
     Register: Burials 1839 - 1861, Page 40, Entry 317
     Source: LDS Film 1471022

Thanks again for finding those, Marj.  I finally got round to sending for the associated death certificates, which came yesterday.

The Elizabeth burial is pretty definitely her, as the informant on the death certificate is Mary Stephenson, present at the death. Elizabeth died 1st March 1851 in Barrowford.

But that's made me rethink the number of children Mary Stephenson nee Hill had, as she has two daughters on the 1851 census: Martha and Ellen.  I'd assumed that Ellen was just the enumerator's mis-writing, or an alternative name, and that the age discrepancy was just one of those things.  But as Elizabeth died 1st March 1851, she cannot be the Ellen on the 1851 census.

Ellen born separately c. 1827 in Gisburn would also fill in the gap between Mary Hill's marriage to John Stephenson in 1825 and the birth of their son, John Ste[ph/v]enson in 1829.  But I'm struggling to see a record of her beyond that mention on the 1851 census.

Can anyone see anything I'm missing?

I came across this map today in my records, showing the old parish of Rochdale, with Littleborough in Blatchinworth with Calderbrook, within Hundersfield.

I thought it might be of interest.
