Frederick Adolphus Fielding
« on: Friday 08 September 17 15:01 BST (UK) »
I have the attestation papers for the Canadian Expedition Force of a Frederick Adolphus Fielding number 2839.
I suspect that this man must be a Captain Frederick Adolphus Fynney who died of his wounds in 1918 for this to be correct he must have transferred. In order to be sure I would like to see the Canadian service records of 2839 Fielding.
Can someone point me in the right direction on how to go about this.

Thank you

There do not appear to be any more Canadian records other than the attestation papers you have.

The Commonwealth War Graves Commission detail for Frederick Adolphus Fynney of the Tank Corps gives the same place of birth as the Canadian record and cites the SA Mounted Pollce that he records on the Canadian papers.

He served in the King's Liverpool Regiment pre war, the Royal Engineers and then Tank Corps in the Great War, serving overseas after 1915.

His British records are incomplete but the Kings Liverpool record can be found here (free)
 http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C13293133
His medal card (£3.50) here
http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D2267555

The London Gazette records his commission as 2nd Lt Royal Engineers on 10 Sep 1915
https://www.thegazette.co.uk/London/issue/29289/supplement/8973

His medal card has his widow as Mrs FA Fynney of Fareham Hampshire.

His Kings record names a brother Oswald in Natal.

If all that adds up for you then the missing bit is from November 1914 in the Canadian forces to a few months later in the Royal Engineers.

There should be an officers record for him in the National Archives but I find no trace of it.

Can't add much to what MaxD has said except to say he was S/Sgt. Fielding up to the time of commission, Canadian A.S.C. Div. Ammo. Park. Reasonable considering his trade.

Thanks to everyone who responded to this.
I now have his full Canadian records from the site posted by nanny jan. Why he registered as Fielding is still a mystery. He is on the IWM every man remembered twice under the name of Fielding once as a staff sergeant which is important to me as I have a photograph of him in England as a Staff sergeant. I can now post this on IWM site in remembrance of him and be certain we have the right man. He is also on that site as Captain where his family details are shown this can also be amended with his picture.
Thanks again to all who responded, a quick result.

Brilliant Jim!! - that is the missing link which brings him from attestation to Canadian Army Service Corps and thence (with a change of name) to the Royal Engineers.  Minor addition, the medal roll shows his transfer to the British Army date as 11 Sep 1915 which cross checks with his commission date.

Boy Scout - his first medal card is here http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D2222436
