MARRIAGE lookup request - PIDDINGTON + ?
« on: Friday 08 September 17 23:13 BST (UK) »
I am trying to track down the marriage of JOSEPH PIDDINGTON & SARAH??? c1665 (first child I know of born 1670).  Their family were raised in Badby, Northants, but they are not recorded as having married at Badby nor elsewhere in Northants.

I've scoured Northants, now trying Buckinghamshire just in case...

Very many thanks in advance.

Joan

Firstly, you are in era of the Commonwealth period of British History, and sometimes there is gap in record keeping and destruction of the same.

http://joinermarriageindex.co.uk/history-of-parish-registers/

QUOTE;
1649-1653: Following the execution of Charles I an English republic was established and represents a period in English history known as the Commonwealth (1649-1653). The Commonwealth proper ended in 1653 with the establishment of Oliver Cromwell's Protectorate. The Commonwealth is a most difficult time period for those of us engaged in family history research because there are large gaps in the records - especially in parish registers. Ironically, it was Oliver Cromwell's intention in an act of 1653 to remedy poor record keeping in parish registers by placing the responsibility for the records in the hands of appointed officers called "Parish Registers". The records kept by Parish Registers became known as Civil Registers but many do not survive. After Charles II was restored to the throne in 1660, Registers were dismissed (some appear to have become parish clerks). Restored clergy in some areas confiscated the Civil Registers and destroyed them. Other clergy simply went around the parish writing down vital events by asking people to remember what had happened in the previous years. Because of the loss of the Civil Registers, this time period is sometimes referred to as the "Commonwealth gap" by family history researchers.

This period, carried on for a few years after the specified dates.

Secondly, I would ask BucksFHS for a marriage search in thier database.

Thirdly, do not discount Warwickshire, as the County lines are quite close.

I have checked the OxFHS - Oxfordshire Marriage index. 1538-1837, and there is no marriage recorded for Joseph Piddington around that time.

Hi Steve,

That is a really helpful response - and yes, I should have realised that we were into the Commonwealth period.

Very many thanks.  jkgla

I did have a look at the Northants Marriage Index, and found a marriage of a Joseph Piddington of Badby and Elizabeth Clarke of Sawbridge on 27 Feb 1665/6 at Chacombe.

Can't find any marriages on Anc*** for Chacombe for anywhere near that date.

Is it possible this was your Joseph, and the vicar has written Sarah down as Elizabeth? Or is this an earlier marriage?

I've looked in the Oxfordshire Marriage index, and the marriage is not in it.  I wonder if OxFHS have missed it. I've looked under Elizabeth & Sarah Clark/Clarke, but on luck. ???

Might the record you found be Banns/Licence only. ???

I wonder if the anyone with access to Chacombe Pr's, could have a peak, and see if it's there. ;D

I'll look again, and triple check.
