William King - builder of London
« on: Saturday 09 September 17 03:15 BST (UK) »
Seeking any information on William King a carpenter/builder (I think there were more than 1 by this name in London at the time! ???)

William was born c1792 in Middlesex.

Former William King & Son (Frederick b1822). Possibly based in Palace St Westminster, then Pimlico.

What information do you already have? Apprentice records? Wills?

William King, carpenter and wife Hannah, baptised the following children at St Margerets Westminster:
Hannah, of Cooper Street, 18 May 1817 (born 28 Apr 1817)
Edward, of Isabella Row, 4 Dec 1819 (born 29 Dec1819)
Frederick, of above, 6 Oct 1821 (born 24 Oct 1821).

Possible marriages.....
William King & Hannah Cowper, 1815, at St Pancras.

William King, widower and Sarah Draper, 1836, in Edmonton.

Note, there are plenty of William and Sarah marriages that would need to be looked at Hannah's death date should help narrow down his remarriage.

A possible burial in 1822, at St Margarets for Hannah King, age 33, of Church Street.

1841 also shows a third son William, age rounded to 15.

Do you have William or Hannah's death dates? Wills?

Any further information will assist rootschatters in helping you as William King is a very common name to search.

Kind regards,

Jo  :)

I'm related to Ann(e) King who emigrated to Sydney NSW Australia in 1858. I believe she was born approx 1836 in London.

Unfortunately there are no parent details on her marriage or death certificates.

She married in Sydney in 1859 and a local newspaper article of the time indicated that she was`the daughter of the late William King, builder, of London'.

Anne's immigration records indicate her parents were William and Mary, both dead (but the mention of Mary could be an error).

I haven't seen any apprentice or Wills for William King, who I suspect died in 1858.

The William King & Sarah Draper marriage is interesting given the timing - 1836? Is Edmonton far from Westminster?

Could there be another William King marriage to a Mary between 1836 and 1839?

Sorry, I don't have much more to work with.

Cheers

This one's tricky, with so many William Kings about.

I don't think he can be the William we've been looking at.  That one died in July 1860 and his Will was proved in 1861, showing he left almost £4000.  So, unlikely that his daughter would take herself off to Australia in 1858

Did Anne travel out alone?

She seems to be alone.

She is listed as a nursemaid (there were quite a few on the ship).

Under religion, it says Independent.

Is there a birth date on her death certificate?

There is a baptism on 14 Feb 1836 at Queen Street Meeting House (Independent) for Ann King, d/o William & Mary Ann, born 28 Nov 1835.

Hi Jo,

thanks for the information.

The death certificate (Aug 1896) says she was `about 61 years', born in London, but no parent details.
