He would not have been the first person to lie about his age when marrying an older woman  ::)

There is a James Howe bn Lawford with father John who is 10 years younger on the census

For what it's worth, I agree completely with everything you say, rosie99 and that James Howe was indeed born circa 1841 Lawford, Essex - birth reg'd Dec.1840 Tendring as 'How'.

It's only his age in 1881 which is 10 years out - aged correct on all other census and even at his death in 1890.
