« on: Saturday 09 September 17 18:15 BST (UK) »
Hi

could anyone help me understand why...

1. My Great grandad had two different military numbers for the East Lancs Royal engineers and also
2. what does the (T) mean after the RE on the bottom line?

many thanks for your help

Hi, the "T" on the MIC "may" refer to him being in the Territorial Force and the other number relates to when he was renumbered, I am absolutely certain someone will be along to either agree or correct me.

Frank.

ADDED: looking at JJen's reply I am probably wrong.

Thanks for these suggestions - is was a driver (horses) and so it could be transport - that would fit.

Do you know how i might find out more about him being in the territorial army before the war? We never knew that as a family.

thanks again

Hi, yes, Drivers were "Mounted" and were used to move heavy equipment etc, around.

I can't find a service record as yet.

I would agree his 4 digit pre war number is when he served as a Territorial. In 1917 Territorials were re-numbered & given a 6 digit number. This is why he has 2.
According to the LLT his 6 digit number was allocated to the 3rd. E. Lancs Field Coy.

A bit more digging reveals that the 3rd. E. Lancs RE were the 429th. Coy. of the 42nd. Div.
He was most definitely TF.
Their war diary is on Ancestry from 1917 when they returned from Gallipoli:
