Does John's service record survive?  Tjere might be some indication of his family on them (for example - was his wife listed as next of kin?)

Do you have the family on the 1911 census?  If so, what was John's location and occupation?

When and where was John born?

Sorry - no answers, just questions.  But they may help the search.
Please help me to help you by citing sources for information.

Jim1 cannot find service number.there are a few contenders ,problem is we don't even have a definite birth record .
I have a civil  wedding cert for his eldest daughter, who married in feb 1917 on which says. John morgan ,private 4th batt., welsh regiment.1, caebont lane, kings square.
A few months later in july 1917,  johns.... wife.... gave birth
To a daughter , he is named as father , says private 4th welsh regiment ( brewers canvasser ). 1, kings square
Also a 1918 register of electors ,2 ,caebont lane.
John morgan. NM.  O
Jessie morgan H0.  HO
NM meaning ..naval or military . Thanks

Your post is confusing, what does "they lived at different addresses" mean?

The family in 1911:

Why do you think he left his family?

Yes. Ref " they lived at different addresses ". ,you are correct that is confusing.... what I should have said is  that over the years they lived at several addresses ,though in the same area .
Why do we think he left his family .??? Well.....either he was killed in the army somehow somewhere ?.... Was injured so badly that he couldn't return ?....   Or as did happen ,quite often  in those days , he just met somone else ? Haven't found a death that fits , military or civilian and which can  prove / disprove .

I can find only 1 John Morgan 4th. Batt. who died. He is commemorated on their Memorial:
http://www.wwwmp.co.uk/local-military-units/4th-battalion-welsh-regiment/
He was Pte. 200499 however his widow was Frances (Fanny) so not your man.
The Medal Rolls reveal just 1 other John Morgan of the 4th. Batt. Sgt. 3011. Unfortunately he's not your man either.
Not much help I know.
Dangerous to read between the lines but perhaps he didn't go overseas preferring to abscond instead.
