What happened to Levi BROOM (b. 1848) ?
« on: Sunday 10 September 17 13:35 BST (UK) »
Levi BROOM (born Oldham 1848 J) marries Violet LEES in 1876, in Oldham.
They are in the 1881 census of Oldham, with one son, Arthur, born 1879. Father Levi is coal miner.
In the 1891 census of Oldham, they have 4 children (incl. Arthur); he is now "herbben manufacturer".

In 1901, I find Violet BROOME, as a lodger, "living on her own means" in Ashton under Lyne (RG13 3780 70 27). She is still married, but no husband or children in sight.
In 1911, she is a boarder, still married, "private means", in another house in Ashton under Lyne (RG14 PN24321 RG78 PN1394 RD468 SD1 ED4 SN227). No husband or children in sight, but on the census forms, she declares that she has been married for 34 years, and had 9 children of whom 4 still alive.

I do not find husband Levi or any of the four children listed on the 1891 census elsewhere. What happened? If she became a widow, would she still be listed as "married"?

Help is appreciated.

Suggest you have a look at passenger lists to (and from) the United States. It may well be that he emigrated to the USA and that most of the children went with him.(Claire posted while I was typing).

Also worth doing a search for him in the USA records on familysearch.

He came back to the country in 1909 as a salesman, but with no children. but he is back in the States ( New York) by 1910 as he appears in the census, married, with children Leonard and Amelia.

He died in 1920

Thank you very much! I had never considered him emigrating with the children and leaving his wife.

This is very helpful.

Nicolaas :)

He arrived back in the US on the 'Celtic' 20/9/1909 described as a 'Merchant'.   Was going to New Jersey and his next of kin shown in England is son A. Brown (think must be error for Broom) of 133 Sherbourne Road, Balsall Heath, Birmingham (can't trace address on census).

Think the son could be  Arthur who did not emigrate with the others to the USA. Worth following him  in the censuses.

Yes - Arthur is at that address - a botanical beer brewer.

This appears to be his death record:  https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:2WBP-4W7  I have heard that these NY City death records contain an image of the certificate if you view it from the computer at a Family History Center, so that may be an option if you want to see it.
