1939 register
« on: Monday 11 September 17 10:49 BST (UK) »
Good morning everyone
I was watching "Who do you think you are" and they were looking at the 1939 Register.  I tried looking for my ancestors but came up with 0 people, well I know my Mum was alive then.  Anyone know how I can access the records like she did?  I really don't want to pay another subscription as I already pay for Ancestry.
Many thanks
Brenda

It may be that her record is locked - if she is living with her parents have you searched for them.

You can search free but to look at the record will mean buying credits.

Other than the free search , which you have already tried I think , there is no way of accessing the 1939 Register without subscribing to FindMyPast. We are not allowed to do look ups on your behalf because of strict copyright regulations.

The guidance on their site is that individuals records remain closed for 100 years from their date of birth. For those born less than 100 years ago records may be opened if proof of death is established. (There are instances where mistakes have been made , either in redacting records incorrectly or making available records which should have been redacted .)

You could try broadening your search terms and looking for other family members , as has been suggested. It is quite common for birth years to be out by a year or two in the Register.

FindMyPast has free weekends and someone on here will put it on a thread to let everyone know. Keep your eyes open for it.

1939 is not usually part of the free weekends.  I think it is only available through subscription or credits.

When you do search, I have found the phrase ' less is more' in terms of what you put in the search terms, true for the 1939. There are many comments to this effect on rootschat and I have found this to be so for the 1939, particularly for places you think they were living and middle names!
