Daniel Reid / Reed / Read
« on: Monday 11 September 17 11:18 BST (UK) »
Hi Everyone,
I'm researching my Gx3 Grandfather, Daniel Reid (or Reed / Read), who was a convict sent to Australia on the Surrey, which sailed from England, on Tuesday, 22 February 1814 and arrived in Sydney on 28 July 1814. The Surrey left England in company with the ship Broxbornebury.

From the Essex Assizes, 1813, a Danl Reed was convicted of house breaking and sentenced to death. I believe he was born 1785, but I would like to know where he was born, exact date, his parents etc.

The following I know of his time in Australia:
- was placed with James Ruse, at Green Hills (Windsor) NSW
- married James Ruse's adopted daughter Ann Kiss on 17 May 1819 at St Matthews Windsor by Banns, and had 4 children - Thomas, Hannah, Sarah & Elizabeth
- moved to the Lachlan River area and farmed
- Died at his residence, Reid's Flat, on the 2nd August, 1869

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanks
Catherine

Thanks warncoort. I think I have every mention of Daniel Reid from Trove. I am keen to learn more about his English side, if this exists.

Thanks
Catherine

Thanks amondg
From the BDM Register, it does not give any info on parents. See attached. I don't have a copy of the Death Certificate. Maybe too difficult to find?

According to the Seax site (Essex Records Office) there was a Daniel Reed who was charged with burglary, 4 Aug. 1813, in that he stole from a Henry Stiles in Rickling, Essex goods to the value of £5 on 20 June 1813. This is probably your man.

Rickling is a village on the road between Bishops Stortford in Hertfordshire and Saffron Walden in Essex or Cambridge, and came within the Saffron Walden administrative district. I would presume that Daniel Reed came from somewhere in the vicinity unless he was an oppertunist who was just passing along the main road. I have had a look at the surrounding villages and all seem to have families with the name Reed, it is quite common in the area even today.

The only baptism for a Daniel Reed that I can see online though, is a non conformist one at Hatfield Heath, a few miles away born on 29 May 1789, the son of a William & Mary. If the age at death is correct perhaps a little to young. You can see most of Essex baptisms on the Seax website at http://seax.essexcc.gov.uk/, but you will need to take a subscription to have access to the original records and I regret that my own has expired at the present time.

Thanks robesur. This is excellent information. I will check the Seax website for other Essex baptisms.

Good luck with your search I am currently looking at Reads/Reeds in Rickling and they are not easy as so many of them. I have been to Rickling and its tiny. I do have a Daniel Read b 1761ish in Rickling but I know nothing about him except his parents were Robert Reed and Sarah Berwick. M x
