John Merritt

Hi,
I am having trouble finding John Merritt who married Charlotte Davis in 1861 Ledbury, Herefordshire. They appear to have had a son Thomas George in 1868 Ledbury, but im not sure if Thomas is actually Johns, and think John may have died before 1865 or at least separated from Charlotte.
Charlotte had a daughter Eliza in 1865 Aston, Warwickshire with George Jepson, who she does not appear to ever marry. Charlotte and George continue to have more children, Charles in 1871 in Birmingham, George in 1873, John in 1877, Albert Edward in 1879, and Frank in 1881.

John was born in 1840/1 and was the son on Robert Merritt according to his marriage cert.
I ordered a death cert for a John Merritt in 1864, but it want him.

Can anyone help?

Do you have the 1861 Census?

Lodgers in Glouscestershire;
John MERRITT, 21 (1840), Lodger,Mar, Miner, born Tavistock, Devon
Charlotte Merritt, 18, Lodger, Mar, born Ledbury, Herefordshire

It seems strange Charlotte would have Elizabeth Jepson 1865 (Mothers mn Davies)
And then Thomas George Merritt 1868.
Unless she was back and forward living with both John/George.

I checcked the newish GRO Index for a Death Reg for John 1861-1871 and nothing comes up for someone in their 20's.
I didnt try the soundex option for other spellings.

You've got the right people! They have caused me some bother! Charlotte was born to James Davis and Mary Chadney, or so thought.... It turns out she was the daughter of the lodger Charles Langford and Mary Davis/Chadney, which is why there is the sudden change of maiden name.
Her marriage to John Merritt lists her father as James Davis, but she later marries Thomas Morley and that one says her father is Charles Langford. Charles was in most of the census with the family, and eventually just with Mary.

I cant find a marriage between George Jepson and Charlotte, and i cant trace Georges line back because of it - There is more than one George Jepson born c1835 in Nottingham.

I figure John and Charlotte may have separated, but never divorced which is why she couldnt marry George. Perhaps John had died by the time she married Thomas Morley. Who knows!!?
