Searching UK census by folio and page?
« on: Monday 11 September 17 19:31 BST (UK) »
I used to be able to do this but cannot find the page any more on Anc or FindMyPast.

Am I missing something?

There may be other ways, but the following works for me:

Ancestry - from home page select the census year (for me it's in a Record Collections box at the top right), then on the next page scroll down a little to select the country as well. The next page has piece/folio/page search options.

FindMyPast - in the drop-down on the Search button select A-Z of record sets and pick the relevant year. Again, the next page has the search options you want.

Meaburn, Mennile/Meynell, Metcalf(e), Palliser, Robinson, Rutter, Shipley, Stow, Wilkinson

I think that for most of the censuses on Ancestry, youhave to:

1. Select Search Census & Voter Lists.
2. Select UK Census Selection from the box on the right ("Narrow by Category").
3. Select the census you are interested in.

The resultant Search Page should have boxes for Piece No, Folio No, and Page No.
Use the "Exact" boxes if you are sure of the data.

You can on Ancestry but it is quite hidden! Unless someone knows a quicker way

1. go to SEARCH

2. Then Census & Electoral Rolls

3. To the right there should be Narrow by Category. Click on the census you want

4. At the bottom of that it says  Included data collections

5. By click the census you want eg 1871 England Census  that allows you to put in folio, page etc

EDIT  Almost the same arthurk, yours looks quicker   ;D

You can customise your home page at Ancestry, and by clicking the button I see that the Record Collections item can be shifted around or removed from sight.

I don't remember putting it there, so maybe it's there as a default setting, but if you don't see it, you can presumably enable it in the same way as I could disable it.

Thanks everyone, you would think the census search would always be the same but its not.....you have to know where they hide them.

I was looking for a Norwegian on a boat in Kings Lynn, his name was "Ludvig Augustinius Nossum"   but it showed up as "Ludvig A Rossum" in the original! I only found him by putting in the Folio and page and Norway born 1869. That gave me about 160 Norwegians which I waded through....

I had got the folio and page number from FamilySearch!

A search of birth 1869 +/- 2 with exact keyword of Norway Lynn gives just 12 possibles in a normal search in 1891 on Ancestry
Middlesex: KING,  MUMFORD, COOK, ROUSE, GOODALL, BROWN
Oxford: MATTHEWS, MOSS
Kent: SPOONER, THOMAS, KILLICK, COLLINS
Cambs: PRIGG, LEACH
Hants: FOSTER
Montgomery: BREES
Surrey: REEVE
