1841 census location - Higher (&?) College, Darliston, Prees
« on: Tuesday 12 September 17 10:09 BST (UK) »
Hello all,

I'm trying to get a better idea of the location of the residence of my GGG Grandfather, John Shingler (20), who was listed in the 1841 census with his mother, Elizabeth (65) in Darliston, Prees, Shropshire.  The residence says Higher (&?) College.   I think there is an "&" between the two words but I'm not sure.  I can find Higher Heath on a map so wonder if that's it? No sign of the word "College".

He was baptized at St Chad, in Prees so I'm guessing it's close by.

I will be visiting the area on Thursday (Sep 14) on my way to Liverpool.

Thanks for any help you might be able to give me.

~Barbara

It could be higher cottage, without the ts crossed. The squiggle could be the same as }  and not a &

Just my thoughts...

Hi,

Although the area covered by the Enumerator seems to Darliston and southwards, I note that in Sandford, just 1 mile to the North, there is both a Lower College and Upper College so I wouldn't discount Higher College just yet.

Neighbouring houses on the 1841 census are Glebe, Lower College and Heath Gates, all of which can be seen on this old map

And the same thing on a side by side map http://maps.nls.uk/geo/explore/side-by-side/#zoom=15&lat=52.9070&lon=-2.6326&layers=176&right=BingHyb

Thanks everyone for your help!

I do like that side-by-side map - very cool.  I have bookmarked that site to use again the future.

I'm looking forward to driving through the area on Thursday!
