Cleary's in Oldcastle Upper, near Windgap, 1850s.
« on: Wednesday 13 September 17 12:00 BST (UK) »
Does anyone know anything about the families of Michael and Patrick Cleary, who were farming in Oldcastle Upper in the Griffith Valuations?
I think their brother, Andrew, settled in Carrick on Suir.
Thank you

Thanks Jack.
DO you know which parish those records are from? Is there an Ossory parish?
I'm not sure about either, though.

In the Tithe Applotment books there is a Widow Cleary mentioned as being on the same property in 1828, http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004625670/004625670_00117.pdf

And the Andrew, who i think may be a brother, was born around 1806.

Give a man a record and you feed him for a day.

Thanks for that. However, the Windgap baptismal register only goes back to 1820s. I think I am looking at dates between 1800 and 1820

Well now you know when they start and that they exist.

Yes, thanks, I appreciate the help.

I am in touch with two others doing research on Cleary's in that general area of south Kilkenny, and it seems that none of us are related (even with DNA matching). There were several different branches.

My only indisputable connection is with a farm in Oldcastle Upper. But I can't find anything else, so far, except the names of the Widow Cleary in 1828 and Michael and Patrick in 1853.

Jack,

Much appreciated. I’ll follow that up. I know that a James Cleary was on a farm in Oldcastle Upper around 1900, when he died, naturally, and gifted it to my great grandfather. He had been a “manager” of the farm in the interim.
Regards
Gerry.
