Tracing Grandad's military record
« on: Wednesday 13 September 17 16:08 BST (UK) »
Can someone point me in the right direction for tracing my Grandad's military records? I have a very tatty photo showing him in India. I believe he was a signaller but not with the Signals regiment (sorry that's probably not the right term). In the photo, he looks in his late teens or early 20s. He was born in 1900, did not serve in WW2, and died in 1983.

Looking at the MOD site for requesting records, it says they have records for service personnel who completed service after 1921. Is he likely to have finished after that time and what about those who served in between the end of WW1 and 1921?

Thanks for any guidance.

It seems he was unlikely to have served in WW1?

If he was still serving in 1920, then the only place to get his records will be with the MOD.
You just need his date of birth, a copy of his death certificate, and £30!

Those serving up to 1920, were (I believe) classified as WW1 soldiers?
But nearly two-thirds of the WW1 service records were destroyed in a WW2 bombing raid.

The remaining records will be on Ancestry and FindMyPast.

When I do that I prefer to think of it as dyslexic fingers! ;D ;D

Many of the soldiers in WW1 were placed on Reserve when they were demobbed - in case the Germans tried again!
So I think it unlikely he served in 1918-1920?
